Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate
Four-week Intensive Summer Program
The TEFL intensive certificate program is intended to prepare new teachers who have no background teaching ESL/EFL, but who would like
to seek employment abroad as English language teachers. The program is also suitable for those who have teaching experience but no formal
training in the area of TESOL or TEFL. (ESL is usually taught in English-speaking countries and EFL is taught in non-English-speaking
countries.)
By the end of the four-week program, successful trainees will be able to do the following:
- Plan effective lessons in the areas of structure, conversation, reading, pronunciation and writing at levels ranging from beginning to advanced.
- Implement lessons with a wide range of effective teaching techniques.
Each participant may communicate via e-mail for up to one year with mentor teachers who can help with any lesson planning or curriculum questions.
The faculty consists of professionals who teach in Extension's International
Education Programs. The practical curriculum allows teacher-trainees to
teach second-language learners from the very first day.
Instruction includes:
- a total of 160 classroom hours (eight hours each day) as well as observations of ESL classes in Extension's Intensive English Program
- extensive classroom teaching practice with ESL students
Each program session is limited to 16 participants, and each teaching practicum is limited to eight trainees.
