Lactation Educator Counselor Training Program

mother and babyIn 1988, a new allied health team member was created when the very first lactation consultants were certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Today, almost 70 percent of new mothers are interested in breastfeeding their young. They need your help to learn how.

Lactation educator-counselors are entry-level practitioners who teach breastfeeding classes and work with pregnant women and their families in the community, in private practice, or as part of their clinical employment. The goal of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully promote breastfeeding in the community and to provide support to the breastfeeding family. Topics include basic anatomy and physiology of lactation, early attachment, in-hospital support post-partum, common concerns and clinical management strategies, appliances and apparatuses used in support of lactation, and breastfeeding curriculum development for the adult learner. A 10-hour clinical component is also required which includes eight clinical case studies and two breastfeeding class observations. This component may be completed after successful completion of the course. A certificate of completion is awarded upon completion of the program.

Note: Please bring a life-sized baby doll to class.
