Can I get into this field?
Only licensed medical professionals
are accepted into the internship portion of this
program. Non-medical professionals may apply for
the online course only.
2. Do I need to apply for this program?
Yes. Please complete and download
the program admissions application and mail
it back to UCR Extension prior to beginning
the course.
3. After completing the
course and internship, can I begin practicing as a SANE or SAE?
Yes! Once you complete both the academic and internship portions of the program, you may begin practicing as a SANE, SAE, or FNE. The term SAE (sexual assault examiner) has become the popular acronym. There are several different titles used throughout the country.
As an additional option, the International Association of Forensic Nursing offers certification as a SANE-A (adult/adolescent) and SANE-P (pediatric). To qualify, nurses must complete a didactic course and internship. UCR Extension’s SAE training program is a recognized education provider for IAFN’s SANE-A certification. For more information about SANE-A and SANE-P designations, visit www.iafn.org.
As far as we know, Florida is the only state that does not accept UCR Extension’s SAE training program. Florida nurses are required to attend SANE training solely provided through the Florida Department of Public Health.
