DID YOU KNOW?

• Each year nearly 70,000 individuals come to the Extension Center on the UC Riverside campus. About half are participants in continuing education programs and the other half participate in conferences and meetings.
  
  
• About 10,000 teachers and school administrators in the Inland Area participate in Extension education professional development programs each year.
  
  
• Over the past 11 years, Extension’s domestic courses have been attended by individuals from all states in the nation. On average, Extension's international programs attract individuals from about 65 countries each year.
  
  
• Online instruction has become a permanent part of Extension's offerings. Extension certificate programs in Medical Case Management, Forensic Nursing, Sexual Assault Examination, Turfgrass Management and Technical Writing are online programs that attract students from throughout the country.
  
  
• For English instruction, international students in China and Korea no longer have to travel to Riverside. The UC Riverside Gangnam Center in Seoul, Korea enrolls 1,200 students per year.
  
  
• Having one of the largest English instruction programs in the nation for many years, Extension's International Education Programs has recently turned its highly successful language instruction methods in a different direction — helping tribal language teachers teach and thus preserve their own languages.
  
  
• The UCR Extension Center is unique among the UC Extension facilities because, in addition to administrative offices, more than 40 classrooms and six computer labs, it has facilities to hold and cater large conferences as well as residential facilities capable of housing up to 180 individuals.
  
  
• Through collaboration with campus departments, Extension initiated Asian language courses at UC Riverside. Starting with Chinese in 1989 and Japanese in 1991, recent additions include Indonesian and Tagalog. The courses can be taken for undergraduate credit by UC Riverside students.
  
  
• From the American Bar Association to the California Psychological Association to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, more than 35 professional associations and accrediting agencies approve and accredit Extension course offerings.
  
  
• Over the last seven years, Extension's Early Childhood and Family Studies Programs have become deeply involved in staff development of early care professionals throughout the Inland Area. Through 2008, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs have implemented training for close to $7 million in grant-funded projects, including Inland Empire and San Bernardino County CONNECTIONS Programs, the San Bernardino County CARES Programs and the Riverside County REFLECTIONS Program. These educational and career support outreach efforts are in partnership with First 5 San Bernardino, First 5 California and First 5 Riverside Commissions; the Riverside County Child Care Consortium; Area Planning Councils and other numerous Child and Family Service agencies, including nonprofit and Faith-based agencies.
  
  
• The first such certificate program in the U.S., Extension's GIS Certificate Program, now in its 14th year, remains one of the most comprehensive GIS programs offered nationwide.
  
  
• The University of California, Riverside Extension received a $1 million endowment grant in 2006 from the Bernard Osher Foundation to provide continued support for educational programs for adults ages 50 and above through UCR's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).
